Remote Video Surveillance and Monitoring for Data Centes and Server Rooms

How important is it to have video surveillance and data center in the server room and data centers. What kind of features and functionality one needs to be effective in Server rooms and Data Centers.

Summary- Video Surveillance in the Server Room and Data Center is getting Crucial and important with contract workers and also people leaving the jobs. The mission critical data needs to be monitored and protected using multiple methods - video surveillance, sensors and alerts along with real time viewing capability to the administrator anytime, anywhere is important. This can be achieved over any PC and also on the PDA.

Here are experts opinions when it comes to video surveillance, sensors and in general how to protect your server room and your critical data.

William McFarland, PE
Senior Electrical Engineer at Borton-Lawson
I believe that in today constantly changing job market, asset protection from disgruntled employees or contractors is critical. I feel that video records provide a level of deterrence. When coupled with a card reader type system, the employees/contractors know that they are being kept track of while in critical space.

Before a recent outsourcing initiative, I had cameras installed in locations where each EPO location was in view. In the past it would have been easy enough to push-n-run but not with a camera there.

As far as functionality, I would go digital CCTV, record 60 days, and use the motion feature to save disk space.

PS – local authorities would not allow the removal of the EPO's.

Patrick Howard

Data Center Manager at Ann Taylor
We have the luxuray of being secured by our very one Loss Prevention Department, taking us out of the surveillance business, and keeps us on Data Center Initiatives.

William Gross

CEO at The MAI Group
I agree that cameras covering all epo locations is prudent. I have also used a system that puts mag locks on racks, and you need card access to open indivdual racks.

I am sorry but what is EPO/-
also if you can access the location on secured connection when there is a alarm how important is that for the industry? the administrator can access the data center from laptop or PDA.

Keith McGinley

Systems Engineer at APC-MGE
EPO = Emergency Power Off. Simply, the big, red, "ONLY PUSH IN CASE OF EMERGENCY" button that will shut power off to all equipment in the data center.

Functionality - you also may want to have the recorded video have watermarks and time stamping in case you ever have to use it in court.

Mick Ryan

Networks/Information Security Supervisor at Corrections Corporation of America
We have CCTV surveillance on all entrances and exits, as well as down each rack aisle, we average around 170 days of continued footage on our DVRs. Is helpfull if you want to see who may or may not have done something in a row of equipment. We are also beginning to put them at our remote facility MDFs to be able to log in and talk someone who is not an IT person on patching something in or checking the status of equipment.

You can setup your cameras for 25fps when motion is detected and 5-10fps when no activity is detected. Additionally camera systems can be tied into access control systems to activate when a door is opened or closed or when a prox card is used. You can also setup email notifications from your access control to let you know if someone has entered the data center and back it up with video footage.

Our data centers do have prox card access, but the cameras help to identify that the person who's prox card was used to access is the same person the card belongs to, until we implement biometrics for access.

Martin Zuckerman

Owner, Teswaine Inc.
It all depends upon your level of insecurity and paranoia. Dont forget that with a high access floor, someone could creep underneath. So add A/C floor pressure sensors and underfloor cameras with night vison.

All cabinets should have individual locks with keys that can't be copied.

Include facial recognition software to prevent potential saboteurs from disguising themselves as employees.

Tom Colegrove

IT Operations and Project Management Professional
Another aspect to consider is if you have clients or tenants that have security requirements that call for cameras. HIPPA, SOX and banking audits call for cameras in data centers.

CCTV for Clarendon, Manchester

CCTV for Clarendon, Manchester

Clarendon and Manchester are poised to boost their crime fighting efforts by the end of the year with the installation of closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) at strategic points in those parishes.

"We don't want just to catch the criminals. We would love for the cameras to be a preventative. We don't want the crime to happen - that is our priority, but if it happens we want to catch the culprits," Milton Brown, mayor for May Pen told the Observer. "I notice that in London the cameras are all over the place and people desist from certain actions because they are of the view that the camera is going to catch them.
We will be concentrating in the town centre and it is a modular system so we can always add more cameras."
Brown declined to say how much the project is going to cost or how many cameras were being installed.
More than 120 persons have been killed in Clarendon since the beginning of the year.

At the same time, Brown, who also heads the Association of Local Government Authorities (ALGA), disclosed that a delegation from the Convention of Scottish Local Authority (COSLA) arrived in the island last week with the aim of partnering with ALGA in carrying out the project.

shared, scalable External IP Solution

Bud Broomhead, CEO of Intransa, the global leader of shared, scalable and simple external IP storage solutions, will be a featured panelist at ISC East, October 29 -30, at the Javits Convention Center, New York, NY. Intransa will also be exhibiting the latest IP storage solutions for physical security in booth 959 shared with IPVS Magazine and IP camera leader Axis Communications.
Intransa products bring the power of IP to video surveillance and other applications through shared, external storage for physical security. Intransa solutions scale from a few days of recording on the edge directly from IP cameras or for a few DVRs, to supporting hundreds of DVRs and thousands of cameras for years of retention with instant playback.
"Adding IP benefits to just one DVR brings reduced cost and improved reliability while dramatically increasing video retention," said Broomhead. "Getting the benefits of IP isn't just for large, big budget projects, but it also plays well when upgrading existing CCTV infrastructures that are in need of cutting costs and improving results."
Broomhead's session, Selling Security Convergence -- Bridging the Gap, will be hosted and moderated by industry luminary and author Dan Dunkel, president of New Era Associates, LLC. The session will be held in room 1E04 on Thursday, October 30, from 10:00 -- 11:30 a.m.
"Security convergence is happening now," commented Dunkel. "The challenge is to understand it and be prepared as it begins. Those attending the panel and hearing the realities from Bud and other panelists will strongly benefit from the session." Additional panelists include Scott L. Greiper, managing director and head of Legend Merchant Group's Convergent Security Group; Kelly Carlberg, worldwide channels, Cisco Physical Security Business Unit; and Wayne Smith, CSSP, vice president technology services, Tech Systems, Inc. Intransa is a Cisco Ecosystem Partner, while Tech Systems is a Cisco partner and member of the Intransa StorPartner security integrator and dealer program.
Now approaching his second year as Intransa CEO, Broomhead will share insights gained in bringing IP into existing analog surveillance environments while maximizing the benefits and eliminating the risk. Intransa customers in physical security, gaming and hospitality, manufacturing, public safety, government and homeland security, retail, transportation, energy, resources and education already benefit from the company's products to extend the capacity and capability of existing DVRs for less cost or for deployment in new, all-IP solutions.
Those stopping by Intransa booth number 959 will be able to learn more about reducing surveillance cost with IP storage and will also be eligible to win an Apple iPod 8GB Touch each day. "It's our way of reminding people that there is more than one way to store video," said Broomhead.
IPVS Magazine recently tested and certified Intransa IP storage for a variety of video surveillance needs and applications, declaring the product excellent overall with a recommended buy rating. Axis Communications is a member of the Intransa StorAlliance Technology Partner program and its cameras are certified through the Security-Grade IP Video Storage program for use on Intransa systems. Intransa is also a member of the Axis ADP program.
Broomhead will be joined by Intransa executives Jeff Whitney and George Vaiser at the show and are available to meet those interested in the latest trends and opportunities in physical security.

video surveillance in retail sector

The increasing need for security worldwide, along with loss prevention particularly within the retail sector, has produced a surge in network video surveillance and adoption of integrated and wireless security systems.

As demand spreads from North America and western Europe to the rest of the world, a promising new technology, called video analytics, takes surveillance to a whole new level. Video analytics can perform certain functions such as identifying abandoned objects, detecting motion, and identifying traffic flow. It is useful for both security and managerial purposes.

This smart tool finds good use in a variety of markets ranging from military, banking and finance, education, airport and even in retail. Although this technology is only in its beginning stage, Frost & Sullivan is certain that video analytics has a lot of potential which can be used in many critical and non-critical verticals.

"Video analytics is the process of using algorithms and software to analyse recorded or live video coverage," notes Frost & Sullivan research analyst Janaki Padmanabhan. "It is the next step to video surveillance where the intelligence of the system is utilized to enable the end user to identify key trends and significant changes in recorded images. The end user will be alerted when there is an unusual event. Video analytics is the key to help end users with the abundance of recorded information."

The downside of regular surveillance cameras is that it relies on the alertness of those monitoring the cameras. However, often the staff/guards monitoring the video footage tend to become inattentive and loose focus. These guards run the risk of missing important information, not paying attention to trends in the traffic and ultimately risking a security breach. This type of human error diminishes when the video is recorded and later analyzed, it provides better analysis of the situation and reports can be generated in desired formats. Analysis of live video coverage also brings the attention of the staff/guards to a current security issue.

Video analytics and its applications generate a buzz of interest within this growing market. The technology offers a plethora of applications already in place with this new technology. Video Analytics can be used as both a security and management tool. Today, business intelligence divides the successful from the rest. This is clearly seen in retail.

In this competitive environment, any pattern or trend that can be identified as a part of business intelligence is crucial. Retailers are looking at various avenues to reduce operating cost, increase security, and operational efficiency. Video analytics software combined with video surveillance is used to identify certain distinctive patterns. The analytics of the video can be performed either live or on recorded content. By signaling to those monitoring the footage when something unusual happens, video analytics provides intelligence alerts.

The primary drawback for video analytics in the retail vertical is that it is difficult to define unusual behaviour. How many times does a customer have to return to the same place before the behaviour is flagged as unusual or suspected of shop lifting? Some behaviours are hard to quantify and vary amongst people.

But alongside these security features, video analytics can be used as a management tool. Retailers can use video analytics to make decisions on store planning, merchandising options and to study the success of marketing plans. It tracks how many people enter the store, the direction of the traffic, the reaction to product placement, the customer's buying pattern and which product was purchased first. It can also be used to reveal if a customer has been too long without assistance. This information can be used to convert customer's long dwell time to make them buy merchandise, maintain customer loyalty and continued patronage.

If video analytics vendors take the time to educate end users on the applications and performance capabilities, we should see this new technology make surveillance more intelligent. They will also need to provide video analytics software which is interoperable with the existing video surveillance system and easy to use.

Traditional surveillance systems - limitations

Traditional Surveillance Solutions
CCTV/DVR/NVR
1. Security focused
that Means such a system is monitored and used mainly by guards
2.Decision makers are engaged late with little
detail
3. Minimal Relevance to the day to day operations
of the business
4. “Tolerate” the Internet
Do not harvest the opportunities and does not go beyond security.
5. Has little intelligence and is manually driven.

Traditional video Surveillance systems in such a way really
Fail to meet the needs executives-on-the-move and does not create
value for stake-holders, managers, owners other than just being there.

On the other hand the newer networked video surveillance systems offers more
and goes beyond security to help you get important business data.

Johannesburg Cops: CCTV cameras effective

Johannesburg Cops: CCTV cameras effective

Johannesburg - CCTV cameras are proving highly effective in combating crime in the Johannesburg CBD, metro police said on Wednesday.

The camera operators in Benmore Towers in Rissik street "are in direct radio contract with officers on patrol and are able to respond to a crime scene as soon as it happens" said metro police spokesman Superintendent Wayne Minaar.

Metro police have arrested 23 petty criminals in the CBD as a result of the CCTV operations since December 1, for crimes including bag snatching, pick-pocketing, cell-phone theft and smash and grab attacks, he said.

At least 308 uniformed metro police officers and 30 plain clothes officers were patrolling the inner city.

Metro police have asked the community to assist in the fight against crime and were being supported by 150 civilian safety ambassadors.

The ambassadors have been trained by metro police, the SAPS and emergency services, said Minaar.

PLANS to setup more than 1,200 new CCTV cameras in Paris will be discussed next week.

PLANS to setup more than 1,200 new CCTV cameras in Paris will be discussed next week.

The project, which could cost €50million , has already received the approval of Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoë.

The prefect for the Paris Police, Michel Gaudin, said the cameras would not cover the whole city but would focus on areas such as traffic congestion, accident blackspots, large public spaces and areas hit by delinquency.

He said their use would be governed by a code of ethics.

The most likely system to implement the cameras would be through a private company who would then rent them out to the police.

The head of the UMP opposition in Paris, Jean-François Lamour, said he fully agreed with the plan but criticised the "late" application of CCTV technology in the city.

Communist Party head Ian Brossat asked why the city council was being asked to pay up for a project that would lead to cut backs in real policing. He added that CCTV would merely move problems not solve them.

OJ Simpson convicted - video/audio surveillance helped

I don't know if everyone is aware but these days, many photos/videos taken by everyday citizens are now being used as evidence.

Take a look at these articles I found about surveillance video and audio being used as evidence in the recent OJ Simpson case.

The first article provides some commentary directly from the jurors who have indicated that it was the audio and video surveillance evidence that swayed their opinions. The second article indicates that the judge had allowed the poolside recording to stand (since it had already been authenticated) and would consider the hotel room recording if the voices were authenticated individually as well.

Using civilian recordings/video as evidence in trials are already being faced within the courtroom and they do not know how to deal with them. THe second article even mentions the possibility that the recordings could have been altered and in a case like this where millions of dollars are at stake as well as a man's life, it is a strong possibility.

What do you think?

Bringing the guilty to justice

There is so much violence in our streets everyday that one might say it is difficult to set foot outside your own home.

Surveillance systems, while not always preventing crime, but are definitely a tool to bring the guilty to justice. A recent case of homeless victims in Florida were beaten to death by two men with baseball bats. These men were under the influence of drugs and alcohol and stooped to this level for fun.

One of the victims died while two others were attacked. All beatings took place in 2006 and the culprits were recently convicted of second-degree murder with two counts of attempted second degree murder each.

Yes the men were brought to justice. One of the beatings was captured on surveillance video and helped to identify these men. Crimes cannot be prevented and surveillance systems cannot promise that. They can however, deter crimes making it difficult for thieves to get away. They can also help bring the offenders to justice.

Man beaten with a hammer on a subway

A man was assaulted with a hammer on a Subway station in Philedalphia, US. A man was sleeping in a subway car and another passenger, later identified as Thomas Scantling, picked up a hammer and started beating the man brutally.

Passengers made no move to help the injured man as he was dragged to the subway platform. As he stumbled back onto the train, passengers finally came to his aid by pulling the emergency cord to alert authorities. He was also escorted to the hospital by fellow passengers.

Police using surveillance video, identified the culprit as Thomas Scantling and have arrested him. He awaits a trial and psychiatric evaluation.

Video Surveillance tools like Cradle's Networked Video Surveillance System can greatly assist in tracking the situation and identifying culprits. In order to be most effective the appropriate day/night cameras need to be installed to get the clearest resolution possible.
